Why has Promise Keepers chosen a military theme for 2008
The team at Promise Keepers has been impacted by the concept of Leave No Man Behind, especially as it relates to men in churches. Far too many men have been isolated on the fringes and dropped by the wayside. What does it take to reach out and build friendships among the men so that no one loses his own battle to stay close to God?Promise Keepers is determined to create an Event that is a catalyst for a change in heart attitudes, individually and corporately, so that men don’t easily drop out of faith in Christ. To do this we are using imagery of warfare because it is a spiritual battle that we are engaged in. We have a real enemy called Satan. Men also understand the military as a metaphor for the spiritual battle. In any battle there are casualties. The men we know who are hurting need our support because we are in this battle together. Promise Keepers only aim is to draw men closer to God and alert them to the real dangers of being passive in this spiritual battle. We have chosen to keep most of the imagery in the WWII period because it is one of the less controversial modern wars.
God is not ashamed to fight. The Bible uses the word army or armies 729 times in the Old Testament and 20 times in the New Testament (NLT). One of the names he uses for Himself is “The LORD of Heaven’s Armies” 247 times (NLT) or you may be more familiar with “The LORD of Hosts”. Hosts refers to people, usually organised in an army.
Our promotional material is based around a message Mike Connell gave at Promise Keepers in 2002. This has a powerful anointing as Mike compares real warfare with the spiritual battle to take back what Satan has stolen. “For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man like Satan and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger – someone who can tie him up and then plunder his house.” Matthew 12:29 NLT Is there going to be a struggle to tie up the strong man? You better believe it.
Promise Keepers appreciates the support of every man, woman and church that promotes this Event and speaks well of us. We understand that there will be a few comments when our poster goes on the church noticeboard. The promo video this year has got more positive feedback than ever. Women especially have liked it as they understand what it is about – motivating men to reject passivity and get involved in the battle for souls, the battle for eternity. We trust that you will stand with us in 2008.
